The Republic of Chad is a landlocked country located in Central Africa. The majority of the country lies in the Sahara dessert. The country’s official languages are Arabic and French. Chad’s economy is heavily reliant on oil. Chad also has robust agriculture and machinery industries. For companies specializing in infrastructure there is much untapped potential throughout the country.

Employment contracts in Chad should be written and include the workplace location, address of both parties, salary, benefits, work hours, notice period, start date and end date, if applicable. A fixed term contract cannot be more than two years long. Employers can use full-time contracts, which must include a start date but not an end date. They can also use fixed term contracts, which must state the start date and the end date. These are capped at two years. These contracts can be renewed but the terms must be included in the employment contract. Employers can also use specific work employment contracts where the employee performs a specific task and the contract finishes once the specific project is complete. It can include seasonal and replacement work.

The work week in Chad is capped at 39 hours per week. Overtime is capped at 94 hours annually. Overtime is compensated at a rate agreed by Chad’s Council of Ministers and Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

Employees are generally entitled to at least five paid sick days per year in Chad.

Female employees receive 14 weeks of half paid maternity leave in Chad with six weeks before the birth. This increases up to three weeks for a pregnancy-related illness. They are eligible for an hour of rest a day for breastfeeding for up to 15 months after the birth. Male employees receive two weeks of paid paternity leave. Female employees can extend their maternity leave if the childbirth is before the expected date. The employer must pay the maternity leave if the employee is not registered with the National Social Security Fund.

Chad has a minimum wage. Bonuses are not required.

Employees in Chad receive 24 days of paid annual leave after 12 months of work.

There is little access to healthcare in Chad. The health insurance is paid within the social security tax.

The notice period for termination in Chad is 8.67 weeks for those with at least five years of service. Severance pay is 5.42 weeks for those with more than five years of service. Those with 10 years of service receive 11.9 weeks of severance pay. Employees in Chad can be terminated when the work contract for a specific project is complete, for misconduct, the end of a fixed-term contract or by mutual consent.
