In Greece, legislation mandates that employers maintain comprehensive records for minors working in their establishments. This regulatory measure aims to protect the well-being of young workers and ensure their employment conditions are safe and conducive to their development. As HR professionals, understanding and implementing these requirements is crucial for legal compliance and fostering a responsible workplace.

Key Requirements

1. Detailed Record-Keeping:

Employers must keep meticulous records of all minors employed. The information to be recorded includes:

  • Employee's name

  • Date of birth

  • Residential address

  • Workbook number

  • Date of issue or renewal of the workbook

  • Type of work assigned

  • Start and end date of the employment relationship

2. Medical Certification:

Before a workbook can be issued for a minor, medical certification is required. This certification ensures that the type of work chosen does not endanger the minor’s health or hinder their physical or mental development.

A minor must be 15 years of age or older and have the consent of their parents, legal guardians, or those responsible for their parental care, for them to be eligible for legal employment in Greece. If consent is not provided, they can request permission to work from the Greek courts, which may grant it based on their decision. Persons below 18 years of age cannot be employed in hazardous work or work that harms their physical, mental, or moral health.

Implications for Employers

  • Employers need to establish a robust system for tracking and maintaining the required information for all minor employees. This includes updating records promptly and ensuring accuracy in the details provided.

  • Employers need to obtain medical certification before employing minors. Employers must collaborate with healthcare providers to secure necessary certifications and ensure that the work environment and tasks assigned are suitable for young workers.
