The Fair Work Commission (FWC) of Australia is responsible for reviewing and setting the national minimum wage and pay rates. This review process occurs annually, with any changes implemented starting from the first full pay period on or after July 1.

Current National Minimum Wage in Australia

As of July 1, 2024, the national minimum wage for adults and employees with disabilities that do not affect their working capacity is AUD 915.90 per week. This is equivalent to GBP 466.11/ EUR 553.63. This rate is based on a standard 38-hour workweek, translating to AUD 24.10 per hour or GBP 12.26/ EUR 14.56.

Special Minimum Wage Rules

Different categories of employees have specific minimum wage rules:

  1. Employees with Disabilities: For those whose disabilities impact their working capacity, the minimum wage is calculated by multiplying the national minimum wage for adults by the percentage of their assessed capacity.

  2. Junior Employees: Typically, junior employees receive a percentage of the adult pay rate unless a registered agreement specifies otherwise. If junior rates are not mentioned, juniors are paid the same as adults.

  3. Apprentices: The minimum wage for apprentices varies based on different factors such as age and experience.

Implications for Employers in Australia

Employers must stay updated with the annual wage reviews conducted by the Fair Work Commission to ensure compliance. Employers should also be mindful of the special provisions for employees with disabilities, junior employees, and apprentices to maintain fair and lawful wage practices.
